Connect Retro Consoles to a Modern TV Without Lag or Blur

Plug an N64 or a Genesis into a modern TV with its original cable and the result is rough: a smeared, fuzzy picture and controls that feel a beat behind your thumbs. Nothing is wrong with your console. The problem is a 1990s analog signal meeting a 2020s digital panel — and it is very fixable.
Why composite looks so bad on a flat screen
Retro consoles output low-resolution analog video, usually over the familiar yellow-red-white composite cables. CRT televisions were built for exactly that signal and displayed it natively. A modern flat panel cannot — it has to digitize the signal, untangle the interlacing, and stretch a low-resolution image across millions of pixels. Most TVs do that job with processing designed for broadcast video, not games, which is where the two classic complaints come from:
- Fuzzy picture: the TV's upscaler smears sharp pixel art into a blurry approximation.
- Input lag: all that processing takes time, and you feel the delay between button press and on-screen response.
The three ways to fix it
- Original cables plus a cheap composite-to-HDMI box. The lowest-cost route if your original cables survived. The catch: the box is upscaling the worst version of the console's signal, so the result stays soft. Fine for casual play; frustrating for anything precise.
- A dedicated HDMI cable for your console. These replace the original AV cable entirely — one end in the console's video port, one HDMI end in the TV — and convert the signal to a clean 720p picture with no modifications to the console and nothing to configure. This is the sweet spot for most players, and it is the route we stock.
- An enthusiast upscaler (RetroTINK, OSSC, and similar). To be straight with you: these deliver the best picture available, with deep configuration options, and they are priced accordingly. We do not sell them. If you are the kind of player who wants RGB cables and scanline settings, that is the rabbit hole to explore. For everyone else, a dedicated cable gets you most of the way there for a fraction of the effort.
Console by console: the cable that fits
- SNES, N64, and GameCube: one 3-in-1 HDMI cable for GameCube, N64, and Super NES covers all three at 720p — these consoles share the same AV connector, so a single cable serves your whole Nintendo shelf.
- Sega Genesis: the Genesis HDMI cable outputs 720p with stereo audio and lets you switch between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios.
- Sega Saturn: the Saturn HDMI cable brings Sega's 32-bit console to modern screens at 720p.
- Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo CD: the Neo Geo HDMI cable adapter covers both systems at 720p.
- Original Xbox: the Panorama HD cable for the original Xbox is a 7-foot HDMI converter for Microsoft's first console.
- PS1 and PS2: the PS2 / PS1 HDMI cable handles both PlayStation generations at 720p, with a 7-foot reach.
- PSP 2000/3000: the PSP HDMI cable puts the handheld's library on the big screen at 720p.
Two TV settings worth checking
- Game Mode. Nearly every modern TV has one. It switches off the heaviest picture processing and noticeably cuts input lag — turn it on for the input your console uses.
- Aspect ratio. Retro games were designed for 4:3 screens, and stretched to 16:9 everything looks short and wide. The Genesis cable has its own aspect switch; for other consoles, look for a 4:3 option in your TV's picture menu.
